TELL US HOW YOU FOUND THE GAME OF GOLF?

My high school north of Brisbane actually made us play golf for P.E class. They filmed our swing at the beginning of 10th Grade & then again at the end of 12th Grade to see our improvements. Cam Smith was in my class so no surprise he got the best grade!

HOW DID YOU END UP IN NZ SHOOTING SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COURSES ON THE PLANET?

In my early 20’s I took up Greenkeeping as a trade at Royal Canberra Golf Club and over many years worked my way into an Assistant Superintendent position over in Canada. I had always been into photography but never within the golf world. Being in a new country I was taking photos more and more on golf courses & got hooked. I then moved to New Zealand to take on a position working for Tara Iti as a greenkeeper and obviously took hundreds of photos, this then caught the attention of the right people and fast forward to now I am working for Tara Iti & Te Arai Links as a photographer.

WHAT'S THE SECRET TO SHOOTING A GOOD COURSE PHOTO?

There’s the classic “rules” of photography that say leading lines, rule of thirds etc. which do all help make a great photo.. but I think a photographer over the years develops an eye for it. Seeing a golf course from both a player's perspective & an architectural perspective helps and trying to tell a story within an image is key.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO SHOOT AT TARA ITI & TE ARAI LINKS EACH WEEK?

Man, it’s honestly surreal. Tara Iti is obviously such an epic place and the hours that I photograph means I usually have it to myself which is crazy. I then had the privilege of seeing Te Arai Links come to life and capture the progress of both the South & North courses. Capturing the story of Te Arai Links has been an honour and I can’t wait until the before/afters start making the rounds!

WHAT MAKES TARA ITI SO SPECIAL?

I think Tara Iti is one of those perfect storm situations.. you have one of the best locations in the world mixed in with one of the most sought after architects in the world. But the thing that a lot of people will tell you is that it’s the people at Tara Iti. It’s not your typical pretentious private club. The people are super nice & the members have one rule.. “NO ASSHOLES”.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE GOLF PHOTO YOU’VE EVER SHOOT?

This one is tough!! I think it would have to be the 6th hole at Tara Iti. The giant sand dune backdropping the insane contours of that hole make it a special one for me.

ANY HIDDEN GEMS TO PLAY IN NEW ZEALAND?

Lots! Waverley & Roxburgh are courses that come up almost always when people talk about hidden gems.

FAVOURITE PIECE OF CAMERA EQUIPMENT TO USE RIGHT NOW?

I’ve been enjoying using my 100-400mm lens but my favourite lens of all time is my 35mm 1.8.. never lets me down.

FAVOURITE PUB TO HAVE ONE OFF THE WOOD?

At the moment my favourite spot would have to be out on the patio at the Mangawhai Tavern but the best bar by far is my Grandad's back verandah bar in Queensland. All the Tooheys and 4X you could ever want.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO WEAR ON THE GOLF COURSE?

A pair of nice light shorts with either a tee or a polo depending on the club. Lately the Black Kooka polo is my go to.

BLADE OR MALLET?

Blade

DRAW OR FADE?

Usually always a STRONG fade.. into the rough.

STINGER OR SKY HIGH?

Sky High

LOWEST ROUND EVER/ AT WHAT COURSE?

It was a long time ago but probably out at Royal Canberra with a few lucky bounces off the many trees out there.
